Who Needs a Kitchen when You’ve Got the Car?

Want to keep that latte hot on the drive to work? Put it in the cup holder. What about keeping that spicy tuna roll chilled on the drive home? Toss it in the glove box. Popcorn in the parking lot? It’s not a problem when you can jump-start your microwave. Some of the latest car features and portable products are making food-on-the-go driver-friendly, not drive-thru only.
The most extreme of these on-the-go products might be the Frank Group’s Wavebox, a portable microwave the size of a mini-cooler. It can be plugged into a wall or cigarette lighter, and, yes, can run off juice from the car’s battery. The 600-watt device is about as powerful as a standard microwave while being 20 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than traditional models, says Tim Frank, the company’s president who got the inspiration when watching construction workers use a full-sized microwave at a site.
Many on-the-go food features are being built right into the auto. The 2007 Chrysler Sebring has cup holders that will heat a beverage up to 140 degrees F, or cool a drink to 35 degrees F. The new Eos from Volkswagen has an air-conditioning vent that feeds into the glove box, creating a cool environment to keep food items fresh at their below-warm temperature.
And say it’s a cold bowl of Frosted Flakes you long for in the morning – leave that hot coffee for the grown-ups! – One new product might be your (sippy) cup of tea. Cool Gear International, Plymouth, Mass., recently unveiled an adult version of their Cereal on the Go container. Fill the bowl with cereal; a freezable milk cup keeps the liquid cold. Snap together and the cereal goes with you to the car or office. Pajamas optional.
